Kurobuta Pork Belly Banh Mi

Yeah I know authentic banh mi’s normally don’t come on a panini grilled ciabatta but Mendocino Farms take on this popular Vietnamese sandwich has me wondering if I’m ever going to set foot in a Lee’s Sandwiches ever again.  Not familiar with Kurobuta/ Berkshire pork? Well it’s one of the most juiciest, flavorful, tender meat you’ll ever taste. Give me a choice between Kobe beef or Berkshire pork and I’ll take that little black hog any day. This sandwich has Kurobuta pork belly that’s braised then caramelized to perfection with housemade pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, jalapenos and chili aioli. The only team that compliments each other better than that is the LA Lakers. 3peat!

Lomito (Steak) Sandwich

Don’t get me wrong I love burgers but steak sandwiches are the shit. Give me a thin grilled slice of USDA prime rib eye on a toasted french roll with all the fixins and I’ll choose that all day over an average burger. The great thing about steak sandwiches are they’re easy to make…

Season

Since these steaks are thin they cook quick on high heat. Only about 2 minutes on each side

Toast some bread and add a little mayo and chimichurri

Then add everything and anything you want. Fresh and grilled veggies, cheese, sauces, etc. The only thing that would of made this better was a fried egg

Don’t forget the onion dip

Cook More

I’m far from a great cook and the stuff I make and post isn’t here to “wow” people. My whole goal is to show how easy it is to cook, anyone can do it and should do it. Just for the simple fact that everybody has to eat and cooking is a great way to save money, eat healthier and to start practicing a skill that you’ll have with you for the rest of your life. Cooking is an art, similar to playing an instrument or learning to paint, it’s a great way to express yourself. It’s one of the most intimate nonsexual things you can do for a person. You want to win over someones heart, cook for them. You want to be healthier, cook for yourself.

Here’s some of the things I cooked the past couple days. Everything was super simple, cheap and easy…

Pasta tossed with chopped garlic, tomatoes, basil, olive oil and seasoning

Hand Cut Potato Chips

Spicy Tuna Roll with Brown Rice

Steak Sandwich

GO LAKERS!

Mortadella and Head Cheese Sandwich

For anyone that’s not familiar with it, head cheese is not a cheese, it’s meat pieces from the head of a calf, pig, sheep or cow  in aspic, with onion, black pepper, allspice, bay leaf, salt and/or vinegar. It usually includes meat from the feet, tongue and heart and is eaten cold or at room temperature as sandwich meat. Mmmmmmm

Mortadella is a large Italian pork sausage with actual cubes of pork fat inside it. Usually the fat comes from the neck of the pig…

See the little cubes of pig neck fat?

Now all you need is bread, mayo, veggies and spicy chimichurri sauce

I get my chimichurri sauce (and meat, bread, mate, empanadas, etc.) from a place up the street called El Gaucho in Redondo Beach. The sauce is made from parsley, garlic, bay leaves, oregano, red pepper, vinegar and oil. You can get it spicy or regular and use it as a sauce or marinade.

I’m dedicating this beautiful great tasting sandwich to all the meat eaters that read this blog and hate all the veggie dishes I post. If you like to put animal head, feet, tongue, heart and pig neck fat between two slices of bread (like I do) my hats off to you…

Homemade Roast Beef Sandwich w/ Mushrooms and Swiss

When Ralph’s gives you a buy one get one free special on meat, make some roast beef…

Wash and marinate in the refrigerator overnight

Throw it in the oven for 20 minutes at 500 degrees then about 30 minutes more at 300. Once the internal temp is 130 degrees your beef will be medium rare.

IMG_8652

Take the meat out of the oven and let it rest for 20 minutes before you start slicing

IMG_8661

Get the mushrooms ready

And if you like heat make sure you add some Philippe’s Hot Mustard. This stuff is amazing! When I went to Philippe’s and tried this mustard for the first time right away it reminded me of getting a tattoo. It hurts so bad but in a weird way it felt so good. I even remembered Lawrence’s eyes kind of teared up when he dabbed a little on his finger and tried it. If you haven’t been to Philippe’s in DTLA it’s definitely a must try and make sure you pick up a bottle of this too…

From scratch

blt

I love BLT’s, I think they’re one of the most superlative sandwiches no matter what kind of bacon, lettuce and tomatoes you use. But here’s what happens when you get a professional writer/ food lover (Michael Ruhlman) to make one from scratch. The tomatoes and lettuce are home grown, mayo and bread are made fresh and the bacon/ pork belly was cooked in the oven (200 degrees) for 3-4 hours then crisped to perfection in a frying pan. Definitely got inspired to make my own bacon after seeing this picture.
